Aim of this research case study is to examine how architectural lighting principles 1) size of the site, 2) shape of the size, 3) natural lighting conditions of the site, 4) the required luminance by the ordinance, 5) energy efficiency, 6) colour temperature, 7) intended purpose of actual use of the premise, 8) involved human activities and 9) effect of the lighting system on humans. The architectural lighting principles are applied to an indoor lighting design project concerning the shopping centre at Double Cove in Ma On Shan, Hong Kong. The shopping centre is first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong in terms of the theme design, has one of the largest overhead roof windows in Hong Kong whose size is 1125.67m2 and. has a quite irregular shape that poses a challenge to the architectural lighting designer.Findings suggest that natural lighting, LED lighting and LED hanging lights are important to energy saving and energy efficiency when the site is large and irregularly shaped to create a warm feeling and satisfy the 100 luminance legal requirement. The findings have asserted that the 9 lighting principles are useful in indoor lighting design and planning. Lighting designers should utilise the 9 lighting principles to plan, guide, analyse and implement all kinds of lighting projects. It is hoped that the current work could be a reference for the practitioners in planning, designing and implementing indoor lighting solutions to shopping centres. In addition, it is hoped that future projects can consider the application of dimmers and research into emergency lighting.
