School and Family Literacy Program

School and Family Literacy Program

In this assignment you will develop a Kaltura recording, including a PowerPoint presentation of Morrow’s family literacy framework. This framework should be based on the Parent/Guardian Involvement Framework found on page 378 of your Morrow textbook. The framework describes family involvement in language and literacy development at school and home. The audience for this presentation is parents and guardians of children in the classroom you have been working in.

  • Describe a framework in which teachers and family members can support a child’s reading and literacy development.
    • Include a background overview of reading theoretical frames and research-based practices that form the basis of the framework.
  • Describe the importance of family involvement in developing reading and literacy skills for young children.
    • Describe the specific role that parents or guardians will play at home with this framework.
  • Describe the school’s approach to teaching and assessing reading and literacy and how it is implemented in your classroom.
  • Explain how the framework will be implemented including:
    • The learning outcomes for children.
    • The process, and practices the children will experience both in the classroom and at home.
    • How children will be assessed.
    • How the program is or can be adapted to meet the needs of all families.
    • How you will maintain communication and collaboration with them about the program (e.g. emails, letters, face to face meetings, zoom meetings).
  • Create resources that parents and guardians can use to support the program including:
    • A parent/guardian checklist to guide literacy practices at home.
    • An evaluation form for the School and Family Literacy Program that parent will complete at the end of year.
    • A list of diverse books (ethnicity, special needs, gender) and activities that coordinate with what is being taught at school.
    • You may use the Guidelines for Promoting Early Literacy at home, the Children’s Literature Bibliography, and other checklists in the Morrow textbook to create these and other resources.
  • Incorporate proper grammar and citations and be sure that the writing style and tone do not detract from the meaning of your presentation.
    • Be sure to proofread your slides.
    • Create a Reference slide at the end of the presentation that includes APA citations of resources you have referenced.
