Vicki, a family welfare centre case worker sees Eric an 8-year-old boy for the first time with his parents. His parents described “hyperactive” behaviour and a propensity to get into trouble. The meeting today was at the request of the family, to provide additional material support to the family. When Vicki meets with the family, she notes that Eric actually appears to be withdrawn and there was little eye contact between Eric and his parents and at times he appeared to physically shrink away from his father. Vicki does not see any evidence of hyperactive behaviour, Vicki does note several severe bruises on Eric’s arms and legs, which Eric’s mother states are a result of rough play. Family also state that they are in financial distress at the moment but hope that situation will change when Eric’s father finds a job soon. Vicki also becomes aware that the father lost his job due to drug use.
