“…he [Spunk] ain’t skeered of nothin’ on God’s green footstool…”
“…he [Spunk] rides that log down at saw-mill jus’ like he struts round wid another man’s wife-…”
Spunk’s character was coined for being fearless. At the beginning of the story, Spunk was narrated as not being afraid of anything on God’s footstool. Which we later found out that this was not true due to his fearful nature adapted at the end which could also be considered supporting to the irony factor. Although the irony was present in the story, it doesn’t negate the fact that Spunk was indeed fearless especially to the towns-folk, and this was proven by his fearless approach to everything including boldly walking through town with another mans wife. Even after being confronted by Joe, and he still strutted throughout town boldly with another mans wife.
